Follow “The Cobra”
As part of our ongoing efforts to support communities where our affiliated railroads operate, we have established a relationship with the Harmony Science Academy in Brownsville, TX. Harmony is a high-performing K-12 college preparatory charter school focusing on math, science, engineering, and computer technologies, with a college acceptance rate of 100%. The school has formed an after school club, The Harmonics Solar Car Club. A team of six individuals is currently working to complete their electric solar powered car “The Cobra” to compete in the 2016 Solar Car Challenge. The 2016 challenge is a cross country event originating in Fort Worth, Texas on Sunday, July 17 and concluding in Minneapolis, Minnesota Saturday, July 23rd. The team driving the most accumulated miles over the six days of racing will be declared the winner.
The Solar Car Challenge was established in 1993 to motivate students in science and engineering, and to increase alternative energy awareness. Students learn how to design, engineer, build, and race roadworthy solar cars. The OmniTRAX Industrial Development Team/GEOTRAC Industrial Hub has agreed to sponsor the Harmonics with a $1,000 sponsorship and outfit them in team shirts and hats required for the race. The Harmonics team has raised approx. $7,500 including our sponsorship towards their $10,000 goal. The money raised will be used for gas, meals and lodging for the ten day event. GEOTRAC Industrial Hub is the result of a strategic partnership between The Port of Brownsville and OmniTRAX. Both organizations are collaborating to spur economic growth within the Rio Grande Valley. When Mr. Lehman approached us about a sponsorship, we immediately agreed. GEOTRAC and OmniTRAX believe in supporting the communities we serve with charitable donations. “This sponsorship gives us the opportunity to donate to a great cause and support the future workforce of this vibrant region”, says Alan Simon, Vice President of Industrial Development.
